Why Stumps Are a Commercial Problem
On a residential lawn a stump is an eyesore. On commercial grounds it is a trip hazard in a pedestrian route, an obstruction to mowing crews, a nuisance sprouting suckers through your beds, and — on a site with recent ash or oak mortality — a reservoir for pathogens and boring insects.
It is also a liability line item. A stump ground flush and covered is defensible. A stump left at ankle height in a landscaped island beside a walkway is not.
Grinding Depth and What It Means for Reuse
| Depth Below Grade | Suitable For |
|---|---|
| 6–8 inches | Turf restoration, mulched beds |
| 12–18 inches | Replanting in the same location, shrub installation |
| 18+ inches, roots chased | Paving, footings, utility trenching, hardscape |
Standard commercial grinding is 12 to 18 inches. If the area is being paved or built on, say so at quote stage — chasing lateral roots is a different scope and pricing it afterwards is how disputes start.
Grinding vs. Full Extraction
Grinding reduces the stump and major buttress roots to chips in place. It is faster, cheaper, and leaves surrounding surfaces intact. Full extraction pulls the root plate out whole — necessary occasionally for deep excavation, but it leaves a substantial void, disturbs a wide area and costs considerably more. For the large majority of commercial sites, grinding is the right call.
What Is Left Behind
Grinding produces a volume of chips noticeably larger than the stump looked. You have two options: backfill the hole with the chips (cheapest, but they settle over the following year and will need topping up, and they are not a planting medium), or have chips removed and the void backfilled with topsoil — which is what you want if anything is going in that spot.
We will tell you which you are getting in the quote. “Stump ground” with no statement about the arisings is a quote worth questioning.
Before We Grind
Every commercial grind is preceded by a utility locate. Stumps sit exactly where irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting runs, and unmarked service laterals also like to sit, and a grinder does not care which it meets. On sites with their own private utility drawings, we want them before the crew arrives.
