Tree Health & Risk Assessment in New Jersey

ISA Certified Arborist inspections producing a documented, defensible record of tree condition and failure risk — the report your insurer, board or municipality will ask for.

NJ Commercial Tree Services provides ISA Certified Arborist inspections for New Jersey commercial properties — documented tree condition, failure risk and recommended action, in written reports suitable for insurers, boards, property managers and municipal compliance.

Assessments across Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, Woodbridge and statewide.

What a Risk Assessment Actually Produces

Not a quote dressed up as an inspection. A defensible assessment records, per tree: species, size, condition, identified defects, the targets within falling distance, a risk rating, and a recommended action with a timeframe.

That document does two things. It tells you what to spend money on and in what order — and it demonstrates that the property owner exercised reasonable care, which is the question that gets asked after a tree fails on someone.

The Standard We Work To

Assessments follow ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification methodology: likelihood of failure, likelihood of impacting a target, and consequence of that impact, combined into a risk rating. It matters because “this tree looks bad” is not actionable and does not survive scrutiny. A large dead limb over an empty field and the same limb over a daycare entrance are not the same finding.

What We Look For

  • Root collar and buttress — decay fungi, girdling roots, prior excavation damage, soil grade changes against the trunk
  • Trunk — cavities, cracks, included bark at unions, response growth indicating an existing defect
  • Scaffold limbs — codominant stems, end weight, previous failures, old topping cuts and the weak regrowth they produced
  • Canopy — dieback percentage, foliage colour and density, seasonally inappropriate condition
  • Site — recent construction within the root zone, drainage changes, newly exposed trees where shelter was removed

Two New Jersey Pests That Change the Calculation

Emerald ash borer is established across New Jersey and ash mortality is effectively total without treatment. Dead ash is the specific problem: it becomes brittle unusually fast, which makes it dangerous to climb and shifts the work toward crane or aerial-lift removal the longer it stands. An untreated ash on your property is on a clock, and the cost of removing it rises the longer you wait.

Spotted lanternfly is widespread and matters here mainly for movement restrictions on woody material out of quarantined counties, and as a stressor compounding existing decline rather than a primary killer.

Both are reasons an inventory taken three years ago is not current.

Inventories for Multi-Site Portfolios

For managers running several properties, a tagged inventory with GPS positions turns tree care from a series of reactive invoices into a budgeted programme. You get a prioritised list, a multi-year plan, and a defensible record per site. It also makes it obvious which sites are carrying the risk, which is rarely the ones generating the complaints.
